Running For: The Oley Foundation

I will be running the San Francisco Marathon to raise money for The Oley Foundation. The Oley Foundation is an organization that provides support and educational resources for patients that require specialized nutrition support including parenteral nutrition (IV) orenteral nutrition (tube feeding) due to an inability to eat or absorb nutrients via regular diet.

I have a personal connection to the Oley Foundation! I ran my first marathon in Memphis, TN in December 2008. My friend and I had trained together and after finishing the race, we couldn’t wait to run the next one. We decided it would be fun to run a marathon in each of the 50 states. In 2009-10 we ran races in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, and South Dakota. In 2011 I got very sick. I was vomiting every time I ate or drank and was diagnosed with idiopathic gastroparesis. I was faced with weight loss and malnutrition that necessitated starting IV hydration and then home parenteral nutrition (HPN). After taking some time off, I finally got back into running and finished two half marathons last year. I have been apprehensive about hydration and nutrition during a full marathon, but after a lot of brainstorming and help from my pharmacists and nurses at my home infusion company, I have a plan! I will be running the San Francisco Marathon July 27, 2014. I am planning to infuse intravenous fluids while running and switch out fluids about every two hours. This should allow me to finish the marathon hydrated.

I have decided to devote my marathon training and race to raise awareness for home parenteral nutrition and to raise money for the Oley Foundation.

I would like to invite other HPN consumers, Oley members, or care givers that are runners to join me for the race. I hope to see you there!
