40 Years of The San Francisco Marathon

The first running of The San Francisco Marathon took place on July 10th, 1977. The 40th Anniversary was on Sunday, July 23rd, 2017. The San Francisco Marathon honored over four decades of runners with a historic 40th Anniversary event. From the Golden Gate Bridge, past AT&T Park, over 27,500 runners came together from all over the world to run the incredibly scenic, USATF certified and Boston Marathon Qualifier course.

40 for 40 Challenge - An Exclusive, Historic Challenge

The San Francisco Marathon honored four decades of finishers with the limited time 40 for 40 Challenge in 2017. Runners who registered for our 2017 races by April 30th and completed at least 40 miles over two years of our races were eligible to earn the 40 for 40 Challenge medal.
