SF Marathon Ranked Among World’s Best and #3 in the USA
We’re not saying we’re elite, but the world kind of just did.
The San Francisco Marathon has officially been named one of the Top 10 Strongest Marathon Brands in the World, landing at #8 globally and #3 in the U.S., just behind the legendary Boston and New York City Marathons.
In a study released by Brand Finance and reported by MSN, global marathon brands were ranked based on perception, legacy, inclusivity, and reach. And guess what? SF showed up strong.
Why does this matter? Because it confirms what our runners have known all along: running San Francisco is more than just a race, it’s a statement. It’s a climb, a triumph, a celebration of grit with views that leave you breathless (in a good way).
Want to feel the energy for yourself? Watch our official race recap video for a front-row seat to the action. From golden sunrise starts to Golden Gate photo ops, it’s got all the vibes.
From the Golden Gate Bridge to the Embarcadero, San Francisco doesn’t just host a marathon, it hosts a moment.
We’ve heard the chatter. “Isn’t that race super hilly?” And honestly, we get it. San Francisco’s reputation for hills precedes it. But here’s the truth: it’s not as intense as you think. The elevation sounds scarier than it feels. Most runners tell us the same thing once they’ve run it: “I was surprised by how runnable it actually was.”
Instead of letting the fear of hills hold you back, check out our elevation and pacing guide to see how the course flows. We’ve even broken down why our hills aren’t deal-breakers and how to pace for them like a pro.
And While We’re Busting Myths… Let’s Talk Weather
A lot of people assume July in San Francisco means blistering heat. But locals know the truth: summer here is famously cool (hello, Karl the Fog 👋). With average race day temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, it’s actually one of the best big-city marathons for ideal race day weather. Cool air, coastal breezes, and that signature SF fog? Basically nature’s air conditioning.
In fact, July is one of the driest months of the year in San Francisco, with virtually no rainfall. This means you can expect clear skies and comfortable running conditions on race day.
Weather is just one part of the equation. The other? How you train for it.
