Creativity on the Course – Art at The SF Marathon

San Francisco is a city that is referred to as different, unique, perhaps even magical. When you show up on race day this year, we hope these words are just a few that will come to mind when thinking about The SF Marathon.

Whether you’ve run this race ten times or it’s your first taste of our city it’s our hope that you will complete your day having enjoyed each component of the race. This year, we’re tapping into our creative side! We want to delight our runners with an array of art from local and national artists. We’re pretty into are here at The SF Marathon offices, and we want to share that with you!

This year, runners will find local art scattered through all 26.2 miles of the course. Be sure to check out Mile Markers along the course featuring art from Nite Owl, John Kraft , Nick Saraga, Tim Lillis, Tommy Noshitsky, Lisa Feather Knee, Cameron Chernoff, and Hilary Williams. If you like what you see along the course, you will have an opportunity after the race to bid on your favorite Mile Marker. Don’t want to wait until race day to check out the Mile Marker art? Come to Secession Art & Design for their happy hour party on Friday, July 22nd from 6.30pm-9.30pm at 3361 Mission/30th.  Sip some wine, chat with other arty runners, and oogle some of the race course’s art.  Take home your very own Hilary Williams print to prep you for race day, and shout when you see it on the course!

For those running the Full and 2nd Half Marathon, local art cars The Janky Barge, The Space Cowboys’ Unimog, The Dodo BusPlayapus Corralus and The Guerrilla Grub truck will be blasting some music and cheering you on along Terry Francois Blvd.

But you don’t have to wait until the end of the race to enjoy the art.

Check out art divas, Trash Mash-Up, at The TSFM After Hours Event at the Conservatory of Flowers on Wednesday, July 27th and make a Finish Line Lei out of recycled materials!

For the second year in a row, the dark morning sky will be illuminated by Robert Bose’s Hellium Balloon Sculpture, extending high above the Start Line.  The Pyschic Taxi Café and Rickshaw will be there to brighten up the Start Line and Finish Lines with their own entertaining additions.

And we’re bringing the art to the Expo this year as well! Be sure to seek out a specially commissioned mural by local graffiti artist, Calder Tani, which is bound to blow you away.

The local art community in SF is filled with incredibly creative and generous folks and we hope you enjoy everything they are bringing to you on race day.
