What it’s like to run Taiwan’s wildest trail race

More than 3,000 runners participated in this event, where nearly 1,100 runners came from 35 foreign countries.
From Ocean Breezes to Rugged Ridges
As the organizer of IRONMAN 70.3 Kenting, I have always been captivated by the tropical charm of this region. To me, Kenting is a true sanctuary for athletes. While my past experiences were confined to the ocean, beaches, and paved roads, helping organize the XTERRA off-road triathlon since 2021 opened a new door. I began venturing into the creek beds, mountain trails, and ancient forests of the Hengchun Peninsula, discovering a side of Kenting above sea level that is utterly mesmerizing.

The 50KM Journey: A Feast for the Senses
The race began with a traditional blessing from the elders of the Gaoshi Tribe under the first light of dawn. Flanked by the iconic Mt. Dajian, we navigated the rocky bed of Shiniu Creek, where the journey unfolded through ever-changing terrain.
Kenting, located on the southern tip of Taiwan, just hosted Taiwan’s first-ever UTMB World Series event: Xtrail 100 Kenting by UTMB on March 7, 2026. More than 3,000 runners participated in this event, where nearly 1,100 runners came from 35 foreign countries.

The riverbed was one of the most technical sections, requiring constant focus to choose each step among uneven rocks, testing your terrain reading and precise footwork. A turn led me into the mountain trail. As I climbed, soaked in sweat, Mt. Dajian reappeared on my right, glowing under the sun. In that moment, I understood why it is revered as the sacred mountain of the Seqalu. It was simply breathtaking.

- The Sacred Peaks: As you pushed through the climbs, Mt. Dajian stood beside you, radiant under the sunlight.
- The Coastal Contrast: A glance back revealed the shimmering ocean, while ahead stretched the endless green of Menmaluo Grassland.
- The Technical Forest: The trail soon led into winding forest paths, where twisting turns put your downhill skills to the test.
Run with Heat
A 50KM trail race is never easy, especially without rigorous training. By the 25KM mark, my legs began to fail me, and cramps set in. Yet the pain felt strangely rewarding, the kind of intensity that defines trail running at its best.
According to the organizer, Xtrail 100 Kenting by UTMB is about “running the heat”:
- The heat beneath your feet across shifting terrain
- The warmth of landscapes that stay with you
- The energy of volunteers at every aid station
- The surge of cheers at the finish line
- The cold release of a beer at the end

A Race Worth Traveling For
This is a race that belongs on every trail runner’s bucket list. Beyond the stunning landscapes, the entire experience is thoughtfully crafted, from check-in to race execution, making it a true pleasure from start to finish. 2027 Xtrail Kenting by UTMB will be held on March 5-7.
