I’m Moving To San Francisco; Will You Be My Friend?

Guest Blogger Eric Jorgensen

One of my favorite TV shows is It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and like most of that show’s fans, Charlie is my favorite character. In the episode The Gang Hits the Road, Charlie admits he’s never left Philadelphia and he has lots of questions about what life is like outside of his hometown. The world outside of Philadelphia might as well have been Middle Earth, because Charlie is absolutely oblivious to the world he lives in.

I’m no Charlie—I don’t boil all my denims or mitten my kittens—but we share curiosity for what life is like in another part of the country. Next week, I’m leaving my current home in the Midwest for San Francisco and a new job. For me, it’s not just a new city, it’s a whole new life, and I have so many questions!

Who is going to be my emergency contact?

Whose idea was it to make parking so freaking expensive?

Why are there no Chick-Fil-A’s in town?

I think I know most of the good places to run in town. The other ambassadors have written several posts about this, which in turn have generated some reader-recommended routes, but a lot of these places are trails. What are some good neighborhoods to run through?

What are the best gyms in town? Do any have a massive tire??

Where’s the best place to eat a monster breakfast after a race?

One thing I am excited about is training with RUN365. I am definitely looking forward to running with other marathoners.  With that, I’m excited to meet all of you. I will be hitting as many training sessions as my schedule allows, and I would love to see you other enthusiasts there.

What are your favorite experiences from training and living San Francisco?

He once had a Coca-Cola commercial made about him for being one of the craziest college basketball fans in the country, which he still is (Rock Chalk). He has run a road race in full hipster garb, and has yet to drown during a triathlon. His first marathon was the 2011 San Francisco Marathon, which he live-Tweeted. Emergency Contact. Funny and smart that you would think of something like that. Would probably list someone at work until you make some cool and reliable friends.

Parking: Get a SmartCar. You can park anywhere. I love mine.

What’s a Chick-Fil-A and why on earth would you ever want to eat it? San Francisco is the most organic, all natural, super health conscious city I have ever lived in. Try a veggie burrito instead. You’ll like it.

Golden Gate Park is awesome to run in but neighborhoods that are the most popular would be Crissy Field, Marina Green and the Embarcadero. You won’t be disappointed.

I love my gym, Planet Granite. It’s a rock climbing, yoga and fitness gym. Free weights, machines, tons of unlimited yoga classes and all the rock climbing you feel inclined to participate in. Super reasonable monthly rate and NO CONTRACT. It’s located at Crissy Field. Sorry, no massive tire. ;)

In terms of massive breakfasts after a race. Totally depends on the neighborhood the race finishes in. Check out http://www.yelp.com.

You’ll love living in San Francisco. We have some of the best training weather. Never gets too cold or hot and you don’t get rained on that much either. There are many places to run and the views are always amazing. Welcome to our awesome city. You’ll never want to leave.

Who is going to be my emergency contact?: You can put me down. Until I actually get a real emergency call which I will ignore, and then you can no longer list me. If you live through the first emergency.

Whose idea was it to make parking so freaking expensive?: Someone I hate.

Why are there no Chick-Fil-A’s in town?: Chik-Fil-What?

What are some good neighborhoods to run through?: Golden Gate Park. Chrissy Field. Embarcadero. Great Highway. None of which are actual neighborhoods.

What are the best gyms in town? Do any have a massive tire??: 24 hour is good for schedule and locations. Crunch is good for group fitness and douchbaggery. CrossFit boxes are good for massive
tires and feeling like spending $200 a month to work out 3 times a week for 20 minutes makes you better than other people.

Where’s the best place to eat a monster breakfast after a race?: There are many. I recommend It’s Tops for pancakes, eggs, and milkshakes. Though it’s not close to anywhere you’d ever run.

What are your favorite experiences from training and living San Francisco?: Never being too cold or too hot. Never needing to drive anywhere to run. Never needing to actually seek out hills for hill training. Living in a city that automatically makes you feel smarter, more liberal and better looking than everyone else. I could go on but I think that says it all. Looking forward to meeting you!
