7 Best Christmas Presents for the Runner in Your Life: A Guide for Non-Runners

The holidays are sneaking up on us again, and you know what that means—it’s time to start hunting for gifts. I’ll be honest with you. Even though I absolutely love getting people gifts when I come upon something that makes me think of them, I find looking for gifts on purpose extremely stressful. Don’t you worry though, as a runner, I’ve got your back this holiday season with this nifty holiday running gift guide.

The good news is that the right running gifts can truly enhance a runner’s experience, whether they like running on the roads around their block or plan to tackle their first trail ultra-marathon. However, there are some gifts you should leave off the list, like fuel. Energy gels, bars, chews, and drinks are a very personal choice of each runner. Unless you’ve got insider info about your runner’s preferences or they’ve mentioned wanting to try new options, buying fuel might not bring the best results.

Now, let’s look for some Christmas gifts for your runner that’ll have them sprinting with joy!

(This post doesn’t include any affiliate links and neither the San Francisco Marathon nor the author benefit from sharing the following products.)

1. Moisture-Wicking Socks

Moisture-wicking socks can be a game-changer for runners. I’ve seen and fixed up my fair share of runners’ feet in less-than-ideal conditions. And if you’ve ever seen a runner wince in pain from a blister, you’ll understand why these socks make for one of the best gifts for runners.

Unlike cotton socks that can hold onto moisture and create an ideal environment for blister-growing, moisture-wicking socks are made from special materials that pull sweat away from the skin. This helps keep feet dry and greatly reduces the chances of getting blisters. (My running life changed completely once I got the right socks and shoes; I can now run blister-free even when I get my feet wet during a river crossing, when running in the rain, or from early-morning dew.)

When choosing socks as a gift, consider opting for top-quality brands like Balega, known for their snug fit, soft cushioning, and durability, or Swiftwick, which specializes in compression and breathability. Trust me, your runner will truly appreciate it! (I personally love my Dynafit socks, especially their Stay Fast and No Pain No Gain trail running series.) If you’re looking for something with a bit more flare, Pacific & Co. has probably the most unique and fun socks out there!

2. Race Entry or Homemade Race Gift Card

Imagine the sparkle in your runner’s eyes when they see an entry to a race they’ve been dreaming about! (Honestly, if someone buys me my dream race entry, we’re getting married right then and there.)

Knowing what distance and event your loved one wants to run is key. Have they been chatting about a ridiculously tough full-moon self-support ultramarathon in the Appalachians? Go ahead and snag that entry! Have they been wanting to start training for their first 5K? Jump-start their journey by securing them a spot in your local race. It’s a gift that says, “I believe in you.”

But hey, even if you’re not sure whether your runner is eyeing a 5K or contemplating a marathon, why not create a homemade race gift card? It’s thoughtful, gives them the freedom to choose their next adventure, and is a better running gift than just saying, “Hey, I want to pay for your next race.”

3. Recovery Tools

Have you ever watched a runner glide across the finish line with that epic, triumphant smile? A lot of magic happens behind the scenes to keep those smiles alive—recovery is the unsung hero. It’s all about giving those hardworking muscles some tender loving care.

Enter massage balls and foam rollers (or, as ultrarunner Brendan Leonard lovingly calls them, ‘home torture devices for athletes‘). These nifty tools will help your runner massage out stiff muscles and help prevent injuries. They make an excellent gift, especially when you want to spoil your runner friend with something practical.

Now, if you really want to leave an impression, consider the Theragun Mini. This portable device packs a punch with its deep muscle treatment capabilities, perfect for on-the-go relief. It’s compact enough to fit in a gym bag yet powerful enough to tackle even the toughest knots. Imagine gifting your running loved one this little wonder—they will be singing your praises every time it saves their race or helps them relax crampy muscles.

4. Hydration Solutions

Hydration is every runner’s (not so) secret weapon. (Hey, I just wanted to sound a little extra.) Good hydration can make the difference between a good run and a grueling one. The right hydration gear ensures that thirst never becomes a hurdle.

When it comes to choosing between hydration vests and handheld water bottles, personal preference plays a big role.

  • Hydration vests are fantastic for long-distance runners who need their hands free. They also offer ample storage for fluids, snacks, and anything else a runner might need out there. (During winter, an emergency blanket and extra clothing basically live in mine.) They distribute weight evenly across the body, making them comfortable for extended wear.
  • On the other hand, handheld water bottles are perfect for shorter runs or those times when you just want to keep things light.

If your runner already has all their hydration needs covered, the CamelBak MultiBev Water Bottle is a quirky gift that will keep on giving. It features an innovative twist, doubling as a travel mug. Not only does it keep your water handy, but it also lets you enjoy your post-run coffee seamlessly. On top of that (literally), the bottle cap can also hold a small snacky snack! (I don’t own it, I only found it on the internet today. However, it’s one of those things I wouldn’t justify buying for myself but would absolutely love it if someone bought it for me!)

5. Running Apparel

When it comes to running, the right clothes can turn a good run into a great one. Comfort is key, and items like cooling hats for sweltering summer days or lightweight jackets for those chilly morning sprints are essential.

Breathable clothing is a game changer, helping regulate body temperature and wick away sweat. Look for shorts and hats designed specifically for different weather conditions. A good pair of breathable shorts will keep you cool during summer runs, while a hat can protect your face and eyes from the sun’s glare.

Running Hoodies and Jackets

Seek out options with moisture-wicking fabrics. Simply said, there are two kinds of running jackets: windbreakers and rain jackets. These jackets not only keep you warm but often come with UV protection features to shield you from harmful rays on sunnier days. For warmth, choose a running hoodie. (Layering is king!)

Breathable Hats

Opt for ones that offer UV protection. Many runners prefer simple caps like BOCO hats, however, if yours is a trail runner, they may like a wide-brimmed hat better. (I swear by it; it took me through a multi-stage race in Moroccan Sahra and will go with me to Kenya, too! It’s also super easy to combine with a cooling towel for extra protection and shade.) Then there’s also the legionnaire hat (a favorite choice of Aussie adventurer and runner Beau Miles).

Shorts

Lightweight shorts with liners are specifically designed to prevent chafing. (They saved me a lot of pain once I found out they existed!) You may want to opt for this one only when you know exactly what your runner likes. Some prefer tighter fits while others like to let everything breathe.

Sunglasses

A runner can never have enough sunglasses. (I’m talking from experience here.) And while your loved one probably has a few pairs of cheap sunglasses, you could surprise them with a nice pair of sunglasses like Goodr with their fun designs and great price-to-quality ratio.

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a cooling towel during a race in Morocco. A hat with a cooling towel is a great way to keep your head cool. (Haha, get it?) Don’t worry if I look unhappy here; it’s because I was just 15 kilometers from the finish and had lost the capability to display my happiness over the previous 100K. (If you’ve ever run an ultra, you’ll know exactly what I mean.)

Unsure About Sizing?

If you’re unsure about your runner’s preferences or sizing, you can always A) Simply ask them, B) Sneak into their closet and look at their favorite workout clothes sizes, or C) Create (yes, we’re coming back to that idea) a homemade gift card for equipment. (Or you can also simply get one from their favorite sports store.)

6. Fitness Trackers & Sports Watches

If your runner hasn’t talked your ear off about them yet, fitness trackers for runners are like having a coach on your wrist. They can track important metrics like pace and heart rate, making it easy for your runner to keep an eye on their progress.

There are numerous brands of sports watches on the market. I started out with Suunto, then moved on to COROS for its battery life. (It can take me through a five-day multi-stage race without a single charge!) The Garmin Forerunner series is also a favorite among runners I know.

Once again, since it can be a difficult and personal choice, you may need to know specifically what your runner wants (or that, on the other hand, they’re not picky). If your runner is anything like my friends, they will have told you about their top choices a long time ago (and not just once).

How Fitness Trackers Can Help Your Runner

Fitness trackers do more than just display numbers—they can also bring about positive changes in your runner’s running routine:

  1. Identifying Weaknesses: By analyzing the tracked data over time, runners can pinpoint areas where they need improvement. Whether it’s increasing their endurance or improving their speed, this knowledge allows them to tailor their training accordingly.
  2. Setting Goals: Personal records (PRs) serve as great motivation for runners. With a fitness tracker, they can easily set specific goals such as beating their previous 5K time or completing a half marathon within a certain timeframe.
  3. Navigating New Routes: If your runner enjoys exploring new running routes or tackling challenging terrains, built-in GPS functionality in fitness trackers can be incredibly helpful. It enables them to plan out routes, use turn-by-turn navigation, accurately track distance, and navigate unfamiliar paths without relying solely on maps or apps. (This feature literally saved me in Morocco when I got off track; my watch starts to yell at me whenever I go more than 20 meters off route and shows me how to get back.)

Every sports watch will have slightly different features. While I find the COROS Vertix 2 suits me best, your runner may have different preferences and needs.

Whether your runner aspires to set personal bests or simply enjoy the thrill of outdoor exploration, this thoughtful present shows your support for their journey as an athlete.

7. Safety & Night Running Gear

Night running can be magical, but safety is key. Here are some gift ideas for things that can help your runner stay safe while they enjoy those nighttime runs.

Reflective Gear

Reflective gear is essential to make sure your runner is seen by drivers and other pedestrians. Look for jackets or vests with reflective strips that catch light from all angles. (Normally, it’s supposed to make you seen and, therefore, safe. And normally, it works. Since I live in a backward rural area where drivers think swerving my way is the funniest thing in existence, I run in a literal traffic vest. If they hit me, I am winning that trial. Should something bad happen, your runner will be better covered legally, too.)

Bright Headlamp

A bright headlamp helps your runner see their path, making night runs safer and more enjoyable. Black Diamond and Petzl are popular choices but there are many more out there that you can choose from. A headlamp with reactive lighting, adjustable brightness, and long battery life will be the best choice for your runner.

Personal Safety Tools

Sadly, despite the age we live in, outdoor running can be a dangerous thing, and not because of the elements or wildlife. You’ve probably seen the news; there’s an epidemic of women being attacked during their runs (even when running in the middle of the day). Consider personal safety tools like rings with serrated edges or pepper spray. It’s not cute stocking stuffing but it might help your loved one return home safe and sound.

Hands-Free Leash for Dog Runs

For those who run with furry friends, a hands-free leash can be a game-changer. It allows your runner to maintain balance and arm movement while keeping their dog secure.

Safety isn’t just about being seen—it’s about feeling free and comfortable in every stride.

Conclusion

Whatever you choose for the runner in your life, I’m sure they’ll appreciate your support. There’s one more gift you could give your runner; go for a short run with them! It might feel daunting but I can promise you, there’s a 99% chance they’ll be excited that you want to join. (Just talk about your expectations beforehand.) Let this festive season be an opportunity to set new goals and commemorate every mile together!
