Take the Golden Challenge!

The Golden Challenge

Earn a special Golden Challenge Medal for completing 50+ marathon miles during the San Francisco Marathon’s landmark 50th Anniversary celebration.

To Qualify:

  • Ran the Full Marathon in 2026, and run the Full Marathon in 2027.
  • Ran the Ultra in 2026, and run any distance in 2027.
  • Run the Ultra in 2027

Rewards:

Challenge Medal at the Expo/Finish Line Festival

Challenge Rules

  • Runners must have completed the Full in 2026, and be running the Full Marathon in 2027.
  • Runners must have completed the Ultra Marathon in 2026, and run any distance in 2027.
  • Run the Ultra Marathon in 2027.
  • In order to be automatically qualified, runners must register for both events with the same first and last name and date of birth.
  • Runners must pick up their commemorative medal at the expo or finish line festival at the 2027 event.
  • Virtual events are not eligible.
  • Please note that only 2026 miles will be counted towards the cumulative goal. (Except those completing the 50 miles in 2027 by running the Ultra Marathon.)

Award Pickup Instructions

  • Check your Bib for the Golden Challenge stamp, this is the ticket to pick up your medal at the Expo. If your bib is not stamped, please visit the Solutions Table.
  • Medals must be picked up at the challenge tables at the Expo (or the Finish Line Festival in the Embarcadero for those with Bib Delivery).
  • Medals will not be mailed for any reason.
